How do I tell what my vase is made from?
I found a vase that I am using on my outside patio table. I am curious what it is made from. It looks like brass from the unpainted bottom. It has a deep golden color. It resonates a high pitched tone when I flick it. It is either painted or varnished with a burnt red color. It is pitted and spotted with green. I don't think it is copper. What are the best flowers to use in this guy. It looks like it was machined because of the very thin and short striations on the bottom of the vase. The top of the vase has a folded lip which isn't exactly straight but at the same time doesn't look as though it was damaged. Is this either a machine mistake or could I assume that it was hand thrown in someone's personal shop.
Sounds like enamled porcelin from the high pitched resonance. Hand thrown brass?
** I thought you might have been confused. When you said handthrown. You can't hand throw brass, you can 'throw' pottery. From your email it sounds like it might be the hand painted brass from India, Turkey etc. Machined, not cast.
