I have a 1600 cc VW engine and need to know if there is a head gasket between jug and the head, usually chevy?
I normally work with small block Chevy's so a VW is a completely different ball game, but i haven't seen anything in any of the VW books about a head gasket so now you understand my dilemma
No gasket- what you need to do is soft lap the jugs into the cylinder head, then get your crankcase seals (thin cardboard rings where the cylinder enters the crankcase) and surfaces good to go and set you deck higth of the cylinders so they match, follow the retorque perfectly as you are crushing the push rod tubes into place along one side then you get a torque on the cylinders. If your engine is newer, it will have "case savers" in it where the head studs screw in. If not =consider getting them done.
