Batters in the game of softball or baseball require protective headgear or helmets that protect a batter's head from any errant pitches that a pitcher might throw. A batter who is hit by a wild pitch can be seriously or fatally injured. A batting helmet must cover the back, top and sides of the head as well as one ear. The ear, which faces the pitcher, must be covered. Right handed batters must have their left ear covered while for left hander batters the right ear must be covered. Switch hitters must wear helmets that cover both ears.

Batting helmets are the rule of the thumb for all levels of baseball and softball and have helped bring down instances of concussions and head injuries among players. Most baseball leagues require players to wear batting helmets baseball while at the plate and even when on the base paths. Little League baseball requires that all base runners, batters and field coaches must wear helmets that are certified by the National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment( NOCSAE) and cannot be painted without the approval of the manufacturer. High school baseball and softball rules require players to wear helmets at bat and at base. At college level, Baseball and Softball base coaches, catchers, batters and base runners must wear helmets that meet the standards of the NOCSAE. Helmets baseball must have double ear flaps while those for defensive softball players, helmets are optional. Batters, catchers and batboys/batgirls are required to wear helmets baseball in Major League Baseball. Batters can choose to wear single ear flap helmets, though.

.

Softball protective gear depends on the type of softball. In fast pitch softball, it is mandatory that the softball batting helmets must have two ear flaps. Softball batting helmets, especially the catcher's helmet must have a face mask attached that has been approved by the NOCSAE . Modern catcher's helmet comes with a skull plate and throat protector. The skull plate in the catcher's helmet is to protect the catcher against injury from a softball bat. In slow pitch softball, adults are not required to wear protective gear, however youth leagues require the similar protective gear as required in fast pitch softball. Softball batting helmets protect runners while they slide into base.

Batting helmets may be made from various materials. The cheapest of these are made of plastic with a protective layer underneath. The more durable ones are made of polymers. Those made from space age materials offer most protection and are extremely durable. Batting helmets with vents in them are useful in summer. Vents keep a player cooler by improving circulation of air beneath the surface of the helmet. However, helmets with vents offer the same protection that helmets without vents do. When buying a helmet, look for one that is neither too tight nor too loose. A helmet that is too tight puts uncomfortable pressure on the head, while one that is too loose might drop down at the wrong time and interfere with the ability to pick up the pitch.
