Jonah's Great Fish Story. What does this allegorical quote of Jonah mean?
"They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy"
(Jonah, from belly of the great fish which swallowed him)
Could it mean they that observe laws forsake their own grace?
Paul says such (law/grace) things are an allegory: Galatians 4.
Solomon notes law is all vanity and vexation of spirit x7.
Paul says: I do not frustrate(vex: law) the grace of God.
Paul says: by the using of laws, all perish: Col 2:20-22
You can run, but you cannot hide from God Almighty. Jonah had to learn the hard way that you disobey God at your peril.
The divine judgement about to befall Nineveh was due to the wickedness of the citizens - they were well known for violence, cruelty and plundering in war (Nahum 2:12-13; 3:1, 19, prostitution and witchcraft (Nahum 3:4) and commercial exploitation (Nahum 3:16). And before anyone dismisses the account in the book of Jonah as being an allegorical story, please bear in mind that Jonah was a contemporary of Amos and Hosea, who were also sent by the Lord to announce to Israel that the Lord would "spare them no longer" and send them into exile, to Assyria. See Amos 7: 8; 8:2 and Hosea 9:3; 10:6; 11:5.
Whilst it is true that the Law of Moses reminds us all of our sinful state, that we are unable to obey the law of God perfectly, and whilst it is also true that everything we do is, ultimately vanity and doomed to failure, I think Jonah was talking about his own disobedience and the plight of those who turn their faces away from the Lord. "Salvation comes from the Lord" is Jonah's conclusion. And he was right.
