Can anyone give me directions on how to build a catapult for physics project?

The catapult has fit in a one cubic meter box. the catapult can fold but doesn't have to, also can not be a catapult with a slingshot mechanism, can not be in anyway powered by electricity, fuel or combustion. Also, once it is finished there will be a softball being shot out of it that has to travel atleast a distance of 100 ft. And it can not be ready-made catapult.

Thanx and let me know if you have any questions.......

Here's my questions:

What, exactly, does it mean that it can't have a slingshot mechanism? Does that mean you can't use surgical tubing to pull a catapult arm, or just that there needs to be a rigid arm? Also, can you use a sling (a rope or something similar, with a pocket at the end, attached to the catapult arm)?

Does it have to be a catapult? Could you use an air-cannon (with the air pressure provided by a hand-operated bicycle pump?)

How big a project is this? Is it something you intend to spend a few hours on, or is this a serious project that you're going to be working on for several weeks?

Finally, the 100 ft - is that in the air, or can you include the rolling distance? If you can count rolling, what kind of surface? (grass, pavement, sand?)

One more question: Could you use, for the base, something like a camera tripod (that both folds, and has extendable legs?) This would be a valuable base, for several reasons:
a) It easily lets you adjust the angle of the catapult
b) The extendable legs mean that your catapult base can be relatively high off the ground (if you throw from higher up, it will go farther!)
c) it's a relatively stable base, easy to attach to, not only for your catapult itself, but also for tubing, release mechanism, etc.

Thanks for looking at our Softball Ft information.
