Guinea pig, smell questions?
Okay, so I'm aware that guinea pigs smell, but I'm still getting one.
(Don't freak out at the word "one." She's an agressive guinea pig who will draw blood if she is put with another one.)
I want to switch to fleece, for soo many reasons. Money saver, comfy-er, etc.
Anywho, 10 points to who can answer my questions with good details? Thanks!
1 - Is it a bad idea to put the cage on a stand about a foot away from my bed?
2 - If I scoop up the poops with a mini dust pan a few times a day, will that reduce smell alot?
3 - How often should I change the fleece? I was thinking every 4 days or so?
Also,
How do I make the fleece so the pee goes right through the fleece and on to the towel? I heard you have to wash it a few times? It's still a bit un clear to me, though. Please help me out, and the more details, the more chance of getting best answer and getting 10 points...
Thanks in advance.
That's odd that your pig is so aggressive. They are usually very social animals and hardly ever bite. Does she have an abusive history? (not that you abused her, but maybe a previous owner might have).
Anyways, I use fleece too, it's great!
1. That's fine. It's funny, that's exactly what I have! I have my bed and then at the end there is about a foot of space, then I have a large coffee table with one of my pig's cage on it. The table is only about a foot high though, however. And the stand must be bigger then the cage or just about.
2. Totally. I scoop up the poops in the morning (off the fleece) and then I shake it out at night. You can't smell a thing! Then, every week (or four days, that's great) you can change the towels underneath and the fleece. Then just shake and throw the stinky fleece in the washer with some white vinegar and it takes the smell out.
3. Yeah, that's a good amount. I usually wash it every four days because I have two pigs in each cage.
4. Yes, you must wash the fleece and then dry it at least three times. This "breaks it in" for your guinea pigs so it will do it's job the right way. Also, some tips...
*Use white vinegar like you would use liquid soap. White vinegar cleans well and removes odor.
*Use the dry soap too.
*No fabric softener or dryer sheets, this will effect the way the fleece works negatively.
