Where did the bytes go in my hard drive?
I posted an earlier question regarding a blue screen with error message bad checksum, corrupt file comctl32.dll. I'm attempting to replace this file in my hard drive. I'm booting up to drive D with a CD. Drive B says to insert disk, E is invalid. Drive C has only 14 files, 0 directories & 16,211,968 bytes free. Drive A is using 903,831 bytes with 324,608 free & has only 30 files, no directories. Where are all my directories? I think A is my hard drive because it has the Autoexec.Bat file but I can't be certain. I've tried everything suggested in the menus of F12 & F2, including configuring to an earlier good know date, safe mode, etc. Nothing works. Just that darn blue screen. I have no Windows operating disk because I have a Dell Laptop & it didn't come with one. Is there anything else I can try that I've overlooked? I ran the scandisk & it says everything is okay. What is my best bet to get this thing running again? I really appreciate your help.
you are booting into the recovery console and it is "creating" drives so you can access the files necessary to run the tools within the recovery console. Because it has to load its own "drives" your regular drive letters are usually moved over one (a becomes b, c becomes d etc.) Try booting without the disc, select the option to boot into safe mode with networking, if you still get the BSOD then there may be something wrong with your boot sequence. Simple solution to this is to do a new install, niw since you have a pre-installed copy of windows this is kind of scary as they are usually set to do a destructive recovery, in that it will reformat the drive and reinstall the OS and programs back to the way you got it in the first place. However you can try to select to "leave current file system intact" and it will somply overwrite the operating system files.
