Calculating Charge of a Cube given E using flux?
At each point on the surface of a cube, the electric field is parallel to the z axis. The length of each edge of the cube is 3.3 m. On the top face of the cube E = -34 k N/C, and on the bottom face of the cube E = +19 k N/C. Determine the net charge contained within the cube.
I calculated the net flux by the following procedure
Flux top = -34 * (3.3)^2 = -370.6
Flux Bottom = 19 * (3.3)^2 = 163.35
Net Flux = Flux(top) + Flux(bottom) = -370.6 + 163.35
Net Flux = 206.91
Next i used this
Epsilon(naught) * Net Flux = Charge(enclosed)
8.85E-12 * 163.35 = -1.445E-9
WHAT AM I DOING WRONG??
the problem is in kN/C so...convert kN/C to N/C
so it should be:
Flux top = -34,000 * (3.3)^2 = -370,600
Flux Bottom = 19000 * (3.3)^2 = 163,350
Net Flux = Flux(top) + Flux(bottom) = -370,600 + 163,350
Net Flux = 206,910
You can't find the net flux if you don't have the E for the other 4 sides of the cube...
if you aren't given the other sides the I would assume:
Qenc=2.0691E5*8.854E-12= 1.83198E-6
