Can i put nylon strings on my sons steel stringed accoustic guitar?
He is only 10, just starting out from scratch, and he is finding it is hurting his fingers a LOT! I dont want him to give up just because of the pain in his fingers
After researching on the net it appears we probably should have bought him a nylon stringed guitar. We do love the sound of the steel strings but i am wondering if it would be ok to change the steel to nylon strings just until his fingers adjust a bit better.
Then we will change the strings back to steel.
Any help will be appreciated.
Cheers
I dont know if this is a classical guitar or not?
This is a really big "MAYBE" but it's an even bigger bad idea.
I start my students (as young as
with whatever they bring with them, and gernerally, that is a steel string. Everbody's fingers hurt when they first start learning. As a child, I practiced until my fingertips bled. In time, callouses will form to protect them.
A better idea is to take the guitar to a guitar shop and ask them if it is set up for "low action" which is easier on the fingers than high action. A decent technician can give you good hints as to how to deal with comfort issues and the guitar.
There IS a difference between a nylon (classical) string guitar and a steel string. The fingerboard is wider on a classical to accommodate the larger width of nylon strings. In addition, the style of playing as swell as the sound is completely different. Thus I would not recommend putting nylons on a steel string.
No PAIN no GAIN!
